In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.
Doctor Who had a LOT of setup to do for the coming big season finale. I would particularly recommend this weeks "Doctor Who: Unleashed" the behind the scenes making-of series for each episode, which has a fascinating piece on how you design and create a set which is specifically to be used by people with multiple categories of disability, it's genuinely eye opening.
There were at least four other things I meant to mention but once again, deadline pressures mean I have to keep this short.
Today is Heat Awareness Day, so pay attention; this is important.
It's hot.*
*Not applicable in the majority of the North Eastern United States. Or the North Western parts. Or Canada. Or England. Or Australia. Or really anywhere else that isn't Florida right now.
And now, let us sing our traditional Heat Awareness Day song!
The heat is on!
The heat is o -- hon!
[guitar riff] Nanananana. Nananana. Na. Na.
The heat is on!
Nanananana. Nananana. Na. Na.
The heat is o -- hon!
Nanananana. Nananana. Na. Na.
Tell me can you feel it?
Tell me can you feel it?
TELL ME CAN YOU FEEL IT???
"Oh, I can feel it."
Well alrighty then.
Thanks to Julia K., Mary D., Meghan H., Miriam S., Richard B., M.R., & Amanda for keeping it hot, hot, hot.

These events happened right here. -------------------------------------- Just a reminder, the second Gunnerkrigg Omnibus from Dark Horse is now available for sale! It contains volumes 3 and 4 in a really nice looking book. There is a softcover and limited edition hardcover available from most places! Click here to see a list of online places it's available, and you can probably find it at your local comic or book store!
Peter David, a legendary comic book writer known for his work on The Incredible Hulk, X-Factor, Spider-Man, and more, has died at age 68. The news comes via his wife, who reported that he passed away during the night on May 24, 2025, after a lengthy illness.
David’s first work was in prose and journalism, before snagging a job in Marvel’s sales department in the 1980s. There, he managed to impress editors, and his first published comic book work was in 1985’s The Spectacular Spider-Man #103. From there, he wrote the classic “The Death of Jean DeWolff” storyline in SpectacularSpider-Man, before moving over to his signature work on The Incredible Hulk.
That's right, buttercup, get ready for some eighties movie madness, starting with these sweets based on The Princess Bride - although I hope you've already figured that out by now.
It's just that I was looking for the DVD at a store recently, and the clerk literally said, "Ummmmm, is that the one with Anne Hathaway?"
Kids.
But speaking of kids, I was sure that Jen had put this Little Mermaid cake in here by mistake, because I totally remember when this movie came out! It can't be that old.
Such military precision! I'd expect nothing less from a Top Gun cake.
But I have bad news: the Terminator is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever.
Ok, fine, so Inspector Gadget isn't exactly the same thing. (And not technically a movie, unless you count the live-action film from 1999 - which you really, really shouldn't. - Jen)
But I can't believe we've come this far without mentioning the most quintessential '80s movie of all, Gremlins!
At least, that's what I've heard. This movie may have traumatized me as a child; I still haven't even seen the entire thing. Great cake, though! His ragged little ears are my favorite - they're so cute and non-murderous.
How amazing is this? It would be an impressive cake if it stopped with the globe, but there are so many other great details, from Jareth's sneer down to the tiny arrows on the stone path. So cool.
You know what? That last cake reminded me of the babe. What babe? This one:
Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. A beauty in black and white! Whit-whoo! (That was me typing out the sound of a wolf-whistle. Not as easy as you'd think).
Now, I'm not sure if this stunner inspired by The Neverending Story is a wedding cake or not ...
...but I can't think of a better way to start a new life together than with a luck-dragon on your cake! Can you? In fact, we should probably just start putting Falcors on all our cakes. Weddings, birthdays, graduations, Falker Satherhoods. All Falcor-worthy.
And finally, the '80s movie cake to end all '80s movie cakes (and especially appropriate since Star Wars day was this month!)
I don't know what's more amazing, the insane amount of detail on this cake, the fact that it was made with modeling chocolate instead of fondant, or, I don't know, that it freaking GLOWS?
I hope it rocked your universe as much as it did mine!
Happy Sunday!

P.S. I just found the most gloriously 80s shirt I have ever seen.
People of any import in your world should have reputations. Not necessarily good ones.
Adventuring heroes who make any sort of impact on the world are of import. People might have heard things about them. Not necessarily good things.
Reputations don't need to be based on someone's major or good achievements. Someone who slew a dragon and saved the kingdom might have a reputation as "that guy who is terrified of ponies" or "the one who ran naked after a clothing thief".
Just pick your party's most embarrassing moments and have villagers everywhere talk about those, not about the monster-slaying stuff.

Oooo, a tracked vehicle! Or maybe a track vehicle judging from the lack of top parts. We don't get to see too many of those in Star Wars. Would it be too much to hope we get to see it in action soon? A high speed chase of some kind with a vehicle like that would be amazing.
And hey! It really is Lando! Nice to see they got Billy Dee back. Or at the very least, an extremely good lookalike. It's curious that he's on Tatooine though. I guess Lando got tired of hanging out with the Rebellion or having his head in the clouds? Or perhaps there's actually some Resistance thing on Tatooine. I guess it wouldn't be the first time, but given that this planet has been used for so many other things, it wouldn't be my first choice for trying to hide a base of operations on.
