One Piece is really good. The art style is kind of weird, but it works well considering it's very much a comedy, and there's at least one art-shift later that makes it look better. As it is, the plot doesn't really kick in until the Arlong Arc. Or, rather, it doesn't visibly kick in until that point. Oda is very, very good at turning throw-away details into incredibly important plot points later in, but that doesn't change that the initial impression is that he's just introducing characters and their motivations in the beginning and doesn't get the plot ball really rolling until the first half of the crew is together. In other words, give it some time. Or just pick up at end of the Baratie Arc, which sets up the Arlong Arc's plot, and then go back later.

I'll take your advice on Brotherhood. It sounds really good.

I actually own a TV set, but the broadband where I'm living is laughable. When I can hope to get speeds up to 1.5mb/s at best and streaming requires 1.5mb/s minimum, it doesn't really work unless you want to be continuously frustrated. I might try the downloading route you've gone. I hadn't considered it before. Hopefully it works with my old-ass TV.

I've seen Escaflowne. It's lovely, but I need to rewatch it because I've forgotten at least half of what was going on in it. I've heard of half of the others, but haven't watched them. You would probably like One Piece and Detective Conan, though. One Piece is all about intense friendships (to the point that the characters have gotten involved in wars and even declared one on behalf of friends) and Detective Conan gets really melodramatic on the romance, albeit in unusual ways. The main character's in love, she loves him back, but neither have said so and now he's been shrunk so he looks like a small child and doesn't dare tell her it's him least she be killed by the people that tried to kill him, even as she insists on taking care of him because she's convinced he's actually his much younger cousin. Gosho's pretty good at the mystery thing, too, so if you like mysteries at all it's a lot of fun. It also, oddly enough, convinced me that ageism exists.

Yeah, the Naruto anime suffers from Dragonball's problems - they slow down what should be fast so they don't surpass the manga. The manga's actually fairly fast paced in comparison, and the fanfiction is awesome, especially if you've ever wandered around the Harry Potter fandom. You've got the same "overcoming severe neglect in awesome ways with the occasional romantic and action scene mixed in" thing going on.
